As our marketing clients are aware, we send out monthly Analytics reports to keep them informed of our achievements. Since these reports have a few terms that aren't common language, we ultimately receive a few questions about the reports. The following glossary explains some of these terms. If you have a question that is not covered here, please contact us directly by phone or email.

Visitor Overview Terms

  • Visit – The number of times your website has been visited. This numbers tells you the total number of guests (including returning guests).
  • Unique Visit – The number of times your website has been visited, discounting repeat / returning visitors. This allows you to know the exact number of people who have visited your site.
  • Pageview – A pageview is an instance of a page being loaded by a browser. This number lets you know how many pages were viewed by all visitors.
  • Pages/Visit – This it the ratio of the number of pages divided by the number of visitors. This number tells us the average number of pages viewed by each visitor.
  • Bounce Rate - Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits. If a visitor enters your site and leaves before viewing any additional pages, this is considered a bounce. (i.e. visits in which the person left your site from the entrance page). Bounce rate is a measure of visit quality and a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance (landing) pages aren't relevant to your visitors. Effective websites generally have a bounce rate below 60%.
  • New Visits – This is the percentage of your visitors that have not viewed your website in the past.
  • Goals - A goal is a website page which a visitor reaches once they have completed a desired action such as make a purchase, complete a form or application, or download. Blue Water Media manually defines each goal for your website. If you require additional goals assigned, please contact us.
